The Black Philanthropy Initiative is a field-of-interest fund at The Rhode Island Foundation. It was established by the Foundation and a group of community leaders to advance equity and social justice for Blacks in Rhode Island.
Until 2010, BPI is focused on raising $1 million dollars. The Foundation will match every dollar raised, resulting in a permanent endowment that will grow and make grants in perpetuity. The campaign is guided by a campaign committee of committed volunteers. Grantmaking in years one and two will focus on economic sustainability and the Black family in the areas of housing, financial literacy, and job training.
Earlier this year, some 100 members of the community joined the Foundation at Providence Black Repertory Company for the public launch of the Black Philanthropy Initiative.
We are trying to accomplish something that has never been accomplished in Rhode Island - a new model for philanthropy in the Black community. We can create a legacy for our future.
