In 2003, the Foundation recognized that affordable housing had become an increasingly urgent issue for many grant recipients. Local businesses told us they could not find workers who could afford to live here. Together with Rhode Island Housing and the United Way of Rhode Island, we convened a coalition of stakeholders to search for solutions. Thus was born HousingWorks RI.
HousingWorks RI is a coalition of more than 120 organizations working to end Rhode Island’s shortage of affordable homes. HousingWorks RI:
- Draws attention to the impact of housing costs and policies
- Celebrates housing progress in our communities
- Advocates for solutions
The Foundation and other funders provide substantial financial and staff support to HousingWorks RI. In 2008, HousingWorks hired its own executive director and created a board. HousingWorks RI’s vision is simple: Quality, affordable homes for all Rhode Islanders.
