Fund for Rhode Island

When the Foundation was established in 1916, its founders believed that “gifts for charitable purposes can be more effectively administered and the income more effectively distributed if such gifts are combined in a common fund; and that the people of Rhode Island may feel assured that their bounty shall be applied in such ways as shall be found, from time to time, to be for the greatest good of the community notwithstanding the constantly changing conditions of human life.”

The current day expression of this principle is our Fund for Rhode Island, which supports causes and organizations throughout the state at the discretion of the Foundation. Rhode Islanders have entrusted more than $27 million to the Fund, placing their faith in the Foundation’s knowledge and expertise to determine the course of their philanthropy, “for the greatest good of the community.” And thanks to the power of endowment, the Fund has made grants of more than $98 million, addressing Rhode Island’s most daunting challenges since 1916.
