Referring to his philanthropy as “legendary in Rhode Island and nationally,” Foundation President and CEO Neil Steinberg named John M. Murphy, Sr. the Foundation’s 2009 Inspiring Partner.
The Inspiring Partner Award, awarded at the Foundation’s annual appreciation event, was established in 2003 to recognize a donor who has inspired the Foundation with the impact of his/her grants and a thoughtful approach to grantmaking.

Murphy, Sr. (left) poses with Brother Lawrence Goyette, FSC, executive director of the San Miguel School. | Murphy, chairman of Warwick-based Home Loan Investment Bank, champions youth and families locally as a longtime supporter of Boys and Girls Clubs, the Little Flower Home in Tiverton, McAuley House, Rhode Islanders Sponsoring Education, and Bay View Academy. He was an early proponent and sponsor of several students at the San Miguel School in Providence and established an internship for students at the University of Rhode Island to serve as mentors in urban classroom settings. He also is a member of the National Professional Advisory Board and an ardent supporter of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN.
At the Foundation, Murphy has created two scholarship funds. The Major Jeremiah P. Murphy Scholarship Fund, established in 2006 in his brother’s memory, provides scholarships for children of active, retired, or deceased Providence police officers. The Horace and Reverend E. Naomi Craig Scholarship Fund was established in 2000 to honor the Craigs for their lifetime of service to Sheldon Street Church, Fox Point, and the City of Providence. The Craig Fund assists middle school and junior high age youth with the costs of attending an independent or parochial school.
Steinberg noted, “Through these scholarships, John is providing critical educational opportunities to deserving students who, like John, come from modest circumstances. With John’s help, they may very well be on the road to the kind of successes he has achieved – and we hope they carry on John’s tradition of philanthropy.”
Murphy, a graduate of Hope High School and Bryant College, was president and chief executive officer of Home Loan Investment Bank from 1975 to 2007. |
