Offering grants to serve LGBTQ communities

Nonprofit organizations have until April 14 to apply for grants of up to $10,000 to encourage justice for or improve the quality of life of LGBTQ Rhode Islanders through the Equity Action Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation.

“This assistance is a source of funding for organizations that serve our LGBTQ communities as well as organizations that focus on initiating or expanding LGBTQ-specific services,” said Adrian Bonéy, the Foundation’s program officer for the Equity Action Fund.

Grants can range from $2,500 to $10,000. Proposals must call for programs and services for the LGBTQ communities or activities such as board development, strategic planning and fundraising that build the capacity of organizations that play a vital and unique role in the LGBTQ communities. Applicants can receive one project or capacity-building grant award per year.

Last year, nearly $60,000 was awarded to nine organizations including GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), Thundermist Health Center and Youth Pride. Over the years, the Equity Action Fund has made more than 110 grants totaling more than $700,000.

The Equity Action Fund is guided by a volunteer advisory committee comprised of community leaders, including Chair Jean E. Burke and Vice Chair Anne Silvia. While the deadline to apply for the major grants is April 14, the Foundation accepts proposals for grants of less than $2,500 at any time.

The Rhode Island Foundation is the largest and most comprehensive funder of nonprofit organizations in Rhode Island. In 2015, the Foundation awarded $41.5 million in grants to organizations addressing the state’s most pressing issues and needs of diverse communities. Through leadership, fundraising and grantmaking activities, often in partnership with individuals and organizations, the Foundation is helping Rhode Island reach its true potential.
