Building public policy by design

Our Centennial celebration is all about building community. So, we’re collaborating with the Rhode Island School of Design to develop local problem-solving capacity. RISD’s Institute for Design + Public Policy is offering a special session in August just for Rhode Islanders.

By making the resources of a world-class institution like RISD available locally, and by bringing together people in the public, nonprofit, and private sectors, we can discover new ways to tackle big challenges.

CIVILian: Reimagining a More Civic Rhode Island will be led by expert design instructors from RISD and feature guest lecturers from across sectors. Tackling topics such as climate change, globalization, and terrorism, participants will examine what the notion of “civics” means as both a concept and a community and personal practice.

During the five-day session, participants will hone their design skills through learning by doing. They will explore human-centered design as a tool for addressing complex public policy issues. We encourage our partners from the public, nonprofit, and private sectors to apply by the deadline of June 10.

“We are excited to offer a session that is custom-tailored for Rhode Islanders. A collaborative process like human-centered design allows for identifying and solving problems by addressing the needs of the people who experience them,” says RISD’s Greg Victory. “With the Institute, we aim to offer concrete tools that translate innovation from an abstract concept into a replicable process. Participants will gain an understanding of the real value of applying the design process to the important work they do every day.”
