Offering grants to serve RI's Latino community

Nonprofit organizations have until Sept. 29 to apply for grants that serve the Latino community through the Juanita Sánchez Community Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation. Grants generally range from $500 to $1,500.

The fund was created in 1992 through contributions from Sánchez’s friends and family members who wished to honor her achievements as a community leader, organizer and long-time believer in fighting for the unmet needs and rights of Latinos. Over the years, the fund has awarded more than $93,000 in grants.

Recent recipients include Beat the Streets Providence, which received $610 to buy uniforms for every student in the combined wrestling program at Calcutt Middle School and Segue Institute for Learning in Central Falls.; Community Preparatory School in Providence, which was awarded $500 to fund scholarships for Latina girls; and Southside Community Land Trust, which received $500 to support summer jobs for local youth at its Somerset Hayward Youth Enterprise Farm in Providence.

The fund is guided by an advisory committee comprised of Marta V. Martínez, Michelle Cortes-Harkins, Tia Ristaino-Siegel and Antonio Sánchez. Supporters can donate to the fund on the Foundation’s website.

“More than 20 years after her death, Juanita Sánchez still evokes powerful memories, smiles, tears, advocacy and the act of giving to Latino issues in Rhode Island. Today, the Sánchez Fund celebrates Juanita’s work by making small grants to organizations that hope to serve the unmet needs and advance the rights of Latinos. As a former colleague and founding member of this fund, I encourage organizations serving our Latino community to apply,” said Martínez.
