Supporting DACA renewals for Rhode Island Dreamers
By Jessica David / September 19, 2017 /   Loading Disqus...

We’ve joined with generous donors to secure more than $170,000 in private philanthropic support to cover DACA renewal fees for those young Rhode Island Dreamers whose Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status will expire in the next six months.

Our Neil D. Steinberg joined Governor Raimondo, the Rhode Island Center for Justice, and a group of Dreamers to announce the funding. For many Rhode Island Dreamers, whose DACA status will expire prior to March 2018, the fast-approaching October 5 deadline to apply for renewal and the associated $495 fee – plus legal services in some cases – present incredible challenges.

Local community agencies will use much of the funding to cover the cost of DACA renewals. Dreamers are Rhode Islanders, and as the state's only community foundation, our mission is to meet the needs of all Rhode Islanders. Like each of us, Dreamers are woven into the fabric of our community – as workers, students, neighbors, friends, and family. We are humbled by the trust they’ve placed in the country and state that we all call home and we are proud to honor that trust by playing a role in supporting their ability to remain active, engaged members of our Rhode Island community.

We have long invested in helping Rhode Island’s immigrant communities work toward achieving the American Dream. Earlier this year, we made a $150,000 investment to be shared by three community organizations – Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island, Progreso Latino, and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence – that 30 years ago began working together to provide immigration and citizenship services to foreign-born Rhode Islanders. That funding is being used to build capacity as they assist immigrants living in Rhode Island on the path to legal residency and citizenship.

Those three community agencies, and others, are now mobilizing in response to the urgent need to assist DACA renewal and work authorization candidates. The Rhode Island Center for Justice is a partner agency of theirs, and will receive some of the just-raised $170,000 to administer DACA renewal fee payments directly to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement on behalf of eligible Rhode Islanders.

For access to assistance with DACA renewal applications and the associated filling fee, please contact Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island.
