Michael P. Metcalf Memorial Fund
Michael Metcalf, publisher of the Providence Journal-Bulletin, was associated with many educational institutions during his lifetime and strongly supported elementary and secondary schools as well as universities. After college and graduate school, Mr. Metcalf traveled around the world, spending time in Australia and the Far East. He believed that trip was one of the most meaningful parts of his education and he felt it gave him broad perspective and insight that he used in his endeavors throughout his life.
A number of generous donors established this fund in his memory. The fund will provide grants to students to subsidize non-traditional pursuits that will lead to their own personal growth and enrichment and to the benefit of their communities. James V. Wyman, Executive Editor of the Providence Journal writes:
"Awards to promising students from the fund will assure a continuance of Mr. Metcalf's efforts over a wide range of issues and disciplines. They will serve as a worthy living memorial to a man who truly cared about improving the world around him. Michael Metcalf believed in the systems that drive our country - social, economic, and political. But he believed, too, that we have a responsibility to strive to make them better. He never stopped trying." |
