Further Instructions
Statement of Purpose The Statement of Purpose provides the review panel with a fuller understanding of your creative practice as a composer, the broader context of your work and how you anticipate utilizing the Fellowship. The panel will use this information in evaluating how the Fellowship might advance your career and benefit your work and enable you to achieve your stated goals.
Responses to the following three guiding questions/statements constitute the Statement of Purpose:
- Describe the compelling questions/issues that have informed your work over the years. Examples may include literature, film, artists that inspire you, art movements, social actions, cultural heritage, and research. What drives your work? [500 words or less]
- Describe how the Fellowship will contribute to your artistic and professional growth. What impact will the Fellowship have on your practice, on your work, professional exposure and desired next steps in you career? [500 words or less]
- Describe how you plan to use the time and resources made possible by the Fellowship; include activities, opportunities, and investments you intend to undertake during your fellowship. [500 words or less]
It is recommended that responses are initially prepared and saved in a separate document for easier editing, then copied and pasted into the respective text boxes in the application.
Work Sample Inventory Prepare a document that lists work samples in the order in which you wish them to be reviewed and include the following for each work sample:
- Title of work
- Year of completion
- Length of piece
- The point of time in each file you'd like the panel to begin reviewing (i.e., 2:03)
- A brief description of any relevant information about the work, its content, and your approach.
- If a sample is excerpted from a longer work, provide a brief description of the selection’s broader context.
- If your work is the result of collaboration and your collaborator(s) is/are not applying with you, please explain the degree to which the sample reflects your work as an individual artist.
- In improvisational compositions where the composer is also performing, please identify the instrument played by the composer.
Work Samples
- You may submit up to four (4) audio and/or video files with a maximum of 30 minutes of music.
- Label each file with your last name and first initial and title of the piece (for example: SmithJ-MySong.mp3)
- Accepted file formats:
- Audio: .Mp3 or .m4a
- Video: .asf, .avi, .flv, .mov, .m4v, .mp4, .mpg, .mvb, .swf, .wmv
- Images: .gif, .png, .jpg, .jpeg
- Docs: .doc, .docx, .pdf, .xls
- Total portfolio size must be less than 2.5GB, with a 750MB limit per file. For applicants who have video files larger than the limit allowed, you may wish to convert your files to Flash Video Format (FLV), which has a good file size-to-quality ratio. To convert video files to FLV you will need a conversion application, usually referred to as a converter or encoder, or will need to utilize an online or in-person service that will do this for you. There are many converter/encoders available — some free, some cheap, some expensive. If you do an Internet search for "FLV converter" or "FLV encoder," along with any video software or computer platform you may be using, you'll find several options.
- If you upload video, we recommend you use a broadband connection (rather than wireless) and allow up to 30 minutes for a 250 MB video to upload.
