Grant Programs

Our discretionary grantmaking falls into three programs—Strategy Grants (the large pool of funds that are granted once a year), Small Grants (reviewed and decided monthly), and special funding opportunities.  Each program has different requirements and deadlines so before applying to any program, please review guidelines, criteria, the process itself, and particularly what we do not fund.  Please also review our Key Funding Areas.

Below are guidelines to the various grant opportunities available through The Rhode Island Foundation with links to the programs:

Strategy Grants
Once-a-year opportunity to receive financial support greater than $7,500 for outstanding projects that advance any of the following three strategies:

Small Grants
Most of these grants primarily serve to strengthen the internal workings of an organization. We also view them as small investments (compared to strategy grants) that can make just as large a difference within an organization and/or the community. Maximum grant sizes range from $1,000 to $7,500.  Applications are reviewed monthly.  Generally, these awards are not to be used solely for general operating support.

Special Funding Opportunities
Identifies other programs from which you might receive support, such as the Newport County Fund, Equity Action, and Hispanics in Philanthropy, among others.
