2001 Yearbook: A Center for Philanthopy

 < return to index page

Mission

The Foundation pursues its mission of connecting private philanthropy to the public good guided by certain principles or core values. The principles that follow serve both as a context and compass for all Foundation objectives, initiatives, programs and services.

Permanence…
Our strength, stability, flexibility and capacity for effectiveness is derived from our stewardship of funds held in perpetuity. Permanent endowment enables the Foundation to address with confidence today’s needs as well as those of future generations.

Integrity…
A commitment to independent governance, objectivity, and honest leadership, because together they maintain the public’s trust.

Vision…
Understanding the importance of innovation, we seek diverse perspectives when identifying needs and finding effective means to address them. Also, the concomitant realization that this search yields the best results when it combines the professional expertise within the Foundation with the knowledge, aspirations, and strategies of others.

Accessibility…
Establishing and sustaining an organizational culture — permeating all programs, structures and activities — that makes it easy and comfortable for all segments of our society to feel connected to their community foundation.

Partnerships…
A willingness to make connections and work with others — donors, community organizations, government, other local funders, national foundations, etc. — to augment and make more effective our own resources.

A Center for Philanthropy

Recognition as a primary Center for Philanthropy is the Foundation’s strategy for achieving its mission of connecting private philanthropy to the public good. This center accepts the challenge to provide resources to individuals, families, groups, organizations and institutions engaged in any and all aspects of philanthropy. Employing its considerable and growing assets of money, knowledge, expertise and technology together with its capacity to broker additional resources from local, regional and national partners, the center assists those who seek to establish, grow, and increase the impact of private dollars dedicated for charitable purposes (regardless whether these funds become a part of the Foundation’s endowment).

Put differently, the center is the Foundation’s public and concrete expression of its commitment – derived from its financial strength, independent governance, permanence and core values – to grow, make more effective and add value to this region’s private philanthropy. In so doing, the Foundation realizes its ultimate objective of sustaining and strengthening the quality of life for all Rhode Islanders.

The center will be fully realized when Rhode Islanders automatically think of the resources of the Foundation when philanthropic thoughts arise.
