The Newport County Fund was established as a permanent endowment of The Rhode Island Foundation in 2002 to benefit the communities of Newport County: Jamestown, Little Compton, Middletown, Newport, Portsmouth, and Tiverton.
The first Foundation-established fund with a geographic focus, the Newport County Fund awards grants that supplement, not replace, the Foundation’s current statewide grantmaking programs.
The Newport County Fund has numerous notable achievements, including:
- Awarded nearly three-quarters of a million dollars to nonprofits throughout the county, with a major focus on improving youth opportunities in the region
- Co-sponsored, with the Newport Daily News, an annual series of convenings on topics of interest to residents of Newport County, with past meetings focusing on smart growth, transportation issues, flexible zoning, and much more.
Even before the Newport County Fund – and continuing today – the Foundation has had a substantial investment in the region, funding programs and projects through the Foundation’s full range of grant programs aimed at “Attaining Vibrant Communities”.
