Ms. Eileen Hayes
Executive Director

Grant: $120,000

Strategy:  Innovative Models/Proven Programs
Region Served:  Providence

PROJECT TITLE:  Amos Culinary Education Program (ACE)

WHY THIS GRANT:
This fourth-year grant funds the continuation of the ACE program and Amos House Works (AHW).  In the past year, the curriculum of the ACE program has expanded to baking, desserts, snacks and gourmet meals at Goodwill Industries for their employees and neighboring businesses.  Additionally, this fall it will expand to the Meeting Street kitchen to provide student meals and meals for area businesses.

The Amos House staff have developed stronger evaluation tools that measure participant and customer outcomes/satisfaction in a more precise and comprehensive way.   The Business Manager has strengthened the profits and loss analysis and performance and has identified potential new partnerships.

One of them is with Fresh Farms RI.  AHW is incorporating locally-grown produce into its meals and business products.  In the midst of developing a culinary arts training program and developing a customer base in order to create a viable business for Amos House, the program has graduated 118 men and women and 60% of them are now employed in the food service industry.  In addition, Amos House Works has created 12 positions for ACE graduates.  This is the ultimate reward.  AHW is fulfilling its mission which is to help people help themselves and have them become part of the solution.

The Foundation’s grant will fund salary support for the ACE program and Amos House Works.  Specifically, the funds will support the Coordinator, Case Manager, Job Developer and Chef Instructor.  The Foundation will evaluate this grant by monitoring Amos House’s ability to:

  • continue to graduate students and employ 60% or more of the graduates,
  • provide healthy meals to children and other clients by increasing the use of fresh produce, healthy alternatives, and low fat menus,
  • create revenue that will be reinvested into the training program and Amos House, and
  • collaborate with new and existing partners.
