Three RI composers win $25,000 fellowships

Jeff Prystowsky, Jacob Richman and Kirsten Volness will receive $25,000 grants from our Robert and Margaret MacColl Johnson Fellowship Fund. They are considered to be among the largest no-strings-attached grants available to composers in the United States.

Carter Roger Williams Initiative offers scholarships

High school seniors have until Feb. 12 to apply for up to $80,000 each in college scholarships through its Carter Roger Williams Initiative at the Rhode Island Foundation. Conceived of and funded by philanthropists Letitia and the late John Carter, the program honors the principles of the state’s founding father.

Addressing alarming increase in  hunger

Sparked by a recent report that hunger is at a 10-year high in Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Foundation announced a $100,000 donation to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and challenged Rhode Islanders to pitch in during this time of extraordinary need.

Students can received up to $7,000 to pursue self-designed enrichment projects that include travel. Past recipients have performed at a classical music festival in Rome, done a medical internship in Tanzania and volunteered at a Costa Rican orphanage.

Jewish groups receive nearly $36,000 in grants

Five Jewish community organizations will receive nearly $36,000 in grants through our Bliss, Gross, Horowitz Fund. The work ranges from a collaboration with the Islamic School of Rhode Island to restoring an historic synagogue.
