Foundation awards $66,000 grant to Hasbro Children’s Hospital Primary Care Initiative

The Rhode Island Foundation has announced a grant of $66,000 to support Hasbro Children’s Hospital’s Primary Care Initiative. The new initiative will help transform primary care services to better meet the needs of the 8,000 children served each year in the hospital’s primary care practice while also enhancing training of the 60 medical residents who care for them. The initiative will lay the groundwork for making Rhode Island the healthiest state in the nation for children. It also will encourage more medical residents to enter primary care.

“We’ve recently restructured the organization of primary care at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Primary care is no longer delivered here in a hospital-based clinic. Rather, we have become a true primary care medical home,” said Patrick Vivier, M.D., director of general pediatrics and community health at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. “In the new system, each child is assigned to a specific physician who is responsible for providing and/or coordinating all aspects of care. Physicians are organized into 11 micropractices, in which they work together to provide better continuity and quality than can be achieved in a large clinic.”

Timothy J. Babineau, M.D., president and chief executive officer, Lifespan, and president, Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital, added, “Thanks to the amazing support of the Rhode Island Foundation, Hasbro Children’s Hospital will serve as a national model for innovation in primary care training and service delivery in an academic medical center. We will build on our recent restructuring of primary care at the hospital so that families feel their children have a consistent provider and the best possible care. And we will bring community physicians and the hospital into closer partnership.”

“The Rhode Island Foundation is a proud supporter of Hasbro Children’s Hospital and in particular of this transformative new initiative that will serve so many of our state’s children,” said Neil D. Steinberg, Foundation president and CEO. “The Hasbro Children’s Hospital’s Primary Care Initiative is a win-win – it will lead to better care and improved health for children while reducing costs and enhancing the training of 60 medical residents in Rhode Island.”
