The Rhode Island Foundation has named John Barnett to the post of vice president of finance and chief financial officer. In his new role, Barnett directs the finance, accounting, budgeting and investment functions for the $800-million community foundation.

“John is an important addition to our team. His strong experience in financial management will ensure that we can continue to execute our strategic priorities around leadership, philanthropy and learning,” said Neil Steinberg, the Foundation’s president and CEO.

Previously, Barnett held senior financial management positions with Fidelity Investments, Cabot Corporation, Teradyne and, most recently, Ironwood Investment Management in Boston, MA, where he was chief operating officer and chief financial officer.

He received a JD from the Northeastern University School of Law, an MBA in Finance from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MSE in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania and a BA in Political Science, Economics, Rhetoric, and Law from the University of Chicago.

The Rhode Island Foundation is the largest and most comprehensive funder of nonprofit organizations in Rhode Island. In 2013, the Foundation made grants of more than $31 million to organizations addressing the state’s most pressing issues and needs of diverse communities. Through leadership, fundraising and grantmaking activities, often in partnership with individuals and organizations, the Foundation is helping Rhode Island reach its true potential.
