April 16 is deadline to apply for grants to serve LGBTQ communities

Rhode Island nonprofits have until April 16 to apply for grants that encourage justice for, support and improve the quality of life of LGBTQ Rhode Islanders through the Equity Action Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation.
“This grant program is a source of funding for organizations serving the LGBTQ communities in Rhode Island as well as organizations that are working to initiate or expand LGBTQ-specific services,” said Adrian Bonéy, the Foundation’s programs officer for the Equity Action Fund.
There are two categories of grants: Projects that meet the priority needs of the LGBTQ communities and capacity-building grants for board development, strategic planning, program development, fundraising or other activities that build the capacity of organizations that play a vital and unique role in the LGBTQ communities. Organizations can receive one project or capacity-building grant award per year.
Since 2004, the Equity Action Fund has awarded more than 100 grants totaling more than $650,000.  Last year, nearly $48,000 was awarded to nine organizations including Crossroads Rhode Island, Family Services of Rhode Island, Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, the Newport Film/Video Society & Arts Collaborative, New Urban Arts, the Northern Rhode Island Area Health Education Center, Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders, Sojourner House and Youth Pride.

The Equity Action Fund is guided by a volunteer advisory committee comprised of community leaders. Michael Grabo is chair and Jean E. Burke is vice-chair. While the application deadline for grants ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 is April 16, the Foundation will accept proposals for smaller amounts on a rolling basis.

The Rhode Island Foundation is the largest and most comprehensive funder of nonprofit organizations in Rhode Island.  In 2014, the Foundation awarded $34.8 million in grants to organizations addressing the state’s most pressing issues and needs of diverse communities. Through leadership, fundraising and grantmaking activities, often in partnership with individuals and organizations, the Foundation is helping Rhode Island reach its true potential.
