TGIF at the Newport Jazz Festival
By Chris Barnett / July 27, 2016 /   Loading Disqus...

There once again will be a third day of performances at the Newport Jazz Festival this year. Our $30,000 grant will help showcase emerging artists and future stars this Friday at Fort Adams State Park. The opening-day performers include Galactic, Kamasi Washington, Tyshawn Sorey & Alloy, Kneebody, The Heath Brothers and the University of RI Big Band. The music kicks off at 11:30 a.m.

It wasn’t always so. In fact, the Festival had gone more than two decades without a third day of performances when we made our first grant two years ago. We’re proud to continue to support this legendary music event as it showcases emerging stars, attracts a new generation of fans, and fills local hotels, restaurants and attractions with visitors for an extra day. George Wein, the Festival’s founder and producer, appreciates the help.

“The support not only brings new and exciting music to the area, but also attracts additional visitors to Newport for longer stays,” he says. “We now have showcased dozens of young artists that are becoming known to jazz fans, and we’re pleased that Friday at the Fort continues to be a perfect platform for nurturing the future of jazz.”
