Nourishing artistic and cultural traditions

We believe in the importance of nourishing the artistic and cultural traditions of the diverse peoples of Rhode Island. This is an important part of our strategy to foster participation in the arts for all.

Collaborating with the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities, the Foundation offers small community-based, culturally diverse arts and cultural organizations capacity-building grants of up to $30,000 over three years through its Expansion Arts Program.

With priority given to newly emerging groups, it provides the skills and tools these organizations need to grow as equal partners in the Rhode Island arts and cultural community.

For the 2016-2019 program, the recipients are RI Cape Verdean Heritage, Colombian American Cultural Society, India Association of Rhode Island, and Laotian Community Center of Rhode Island. All were recently given the opportunity to explain their mission at the 2016 Expansion Arts Program Convening held at the Southside Cultural Center on Broad Street in Providence. Convening guests included Expansion Arts alumni, reflecting one of the program’s goals of creating a vibrant network of support and leverage.

In seeking to build the capacity of these organizations, we recognize the broader role they play in strengthening their communities including cultural preservation, education and youth development.
