Building community with music

More than 7,000 people joined us at Roger Williams Park last week for a wonderful celebration of community – a free concert by the Rhode Island Philharmonic. The event showcased one of our state’s cultural treasures in one of our best-loved places for the people of Rhode Island.

We first brought the Philharmonic to Roger Williams Park last year to celebrate our Centennial. Although we thought it would be a one-time event, that night was so successful and enjoyed by so many we decided to bring the Philharmonic back again. We even added a new twist – Food Truck Friday caravanned from its usual spot at Carousel Village to join us.

Blankets and lawn chairs spilled down the hillsides to the foot of the Temple to Music as strobes lit up the night. The highlights of the two-hour performance included rousing standards like the Star Spangled Banner, the 1812 Overture and the Stars and Stripes Forever.

The concert came as our effort to restore Roger Williams Park continues. The work includes improvements to the park’s entrances, repairs to the Museum of Natural History, the Bandstand and the Casino; and the creation of the Roger Williams Park Conservancy to provide stewardship for generations to come.
