Hundreds of students receive scholarships

Students from across the state headed off to college this month with the help of nearly $1.8 million in scholarships from the Rhode Island Foundation.

“These scholarships honor not just the recipients, but the donors who make their dreams of a better future come true,” said Neil D. Steinberg, the Foundation’s president and CEO. “The benefits of their generosity will pay dividends for decades as these young people enter the workforce and the civic life of their communities.”

Dozens of individual, family and organizational donors established scholarship funds at the Foundation to help students defray educational expenses such as tuition, fees and books.

"Working and being a full-time student is tough. Thanks to this scholarship, I am one step closer to my goal. By awarding me this scholarship, a financial burden is lessened and I can focus more on school,” says Bristol resident Sarah St. Vincent, a senior nursing major at Rhode Island College who received help from the Foundation’s Bristol Children's Home and Albert E. and Florence W. Newton funds.

In addition to general scholarship assistance, funds such as A.T. Cross, the Smithfield Rotary and Black Philanthropy Bannister offer help based on employment or hometown among other factors. In addition, some funds target fields of study such as nursing, engineering and communications.

Here is the complete list of scholarships, application deadlines and eligibility requirements.

The Rhode Island Foundation is the largest and most comprehensive funder of nonprofit organizations in Rhode Island. In 2016, the Foundation awarded a record $45 million in grants to organizations addressing the state’s most pressing issues and needs of diverse communities. Through leadership, fundraising and grantmaking activities, often in partnership with individuals and organizations, the Foundation is helping Rhode Island reach its true potential.
