Buy Local RI wraps up small business month with Golden Chicken Awards

We closed out National Small Business Month last Thursday with the inaugural Buy Local RI Golden Chicken Awards.

Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and our communities. They employ our people, keep money local longer, shape our places, and give to local nonprofits. For residents to have access to good jobs, we need strong independent businesses. That’s why Buy Local RI encourages all Rhode Islanders to support locally owned companies, products, and services.

The Golden Chicken honors local businesses that meet the highest standard of all: they are beloved by their customers. Because no one knows and appreciates Rhode Island small businesses more than Rhode Islanders, during the month of May, we asked you to nominate your favorite local small business. We received over 200 nominations! Here’s some of what you had to say about your local favorites:

“Rhode Runner is a locally owned running specialty store with highly trained, knowledgeable, passionate staff. They are the best!!”

Little Falls Café is “a real community space, always warm and welcoming, great coffee and scones!”

“The owner (of Rhode Island Natural Soap Co.) is a kind and giving person. She really has a passion for what she does and you can see it in her work. I even got a thank you note in the mail!”

Five of the top nominated businesses received not only tremendous praise and prestige but a special delivery of their award. Congratulations to our inaugural Golden Chicken awardees:

·         Art & Soul Gifts, Cranston

·         Bone Appetit, East Greenwich

·         Matt’s Pharmacy, Middletown

·         Thailand Providence, Providence

·         Yacht Club Soda, North Providence

Please do your part by visiting these local businesses. And congratulations to all of the nominees.
