Nonprofit organizations have until Sept. 4 to apply for grants of up to $75,000 to improve primary health care and health outcomes through the RIGHA Foundation Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation. As much as $285,000 in funding could be awarded.

“Supporting work that improves the health of Rhode Islanders is one of our primary objectives. Our priority is proposals that will significantly impact the delivery of quality and affordable health care services or that will connect people with the community health resources necessary for better health outcomes,” said Larry Warner, strategic initiative officer for the Foundation’s Health sector.

Proposals should address community needs, have measurable outcomes, show a willingness to think creatively about non-traditional partners and demonstrate collaborative capacity, including the ability to foster partnerships among public and private payers, health care providers and other practitioners in the field.

Recent recipients include Clínica Esperanza, which received $20,000 to screen and care for patients with chronic diseases who are likely to become insured within the next five years; the Rhode Island Free Clinic, which was awarded $20,000 to provide low-income, uninsured patients with expanded behavioral health services; and the Scituate Health Alliance, which received $35,000 to support the cost of providing a town nurse.

The RIGHA fund was created after Harvard Pilgrim Health Care acquired the former Rhode Island Group Health Association. In 2010, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and the RIGHA Foundation transferred its $1.7 million endowment to the Rhode Island Foundation. Harvard Pilgrim Health Care continues to make annual payments to the fund, which promotes the development of a successful and effective primary health care system in the state.

“We are pleased to support this initiative to build healthy communities. Using philanthropy, we can encourage innovation and collaboration in the health care sector to yield real progress,” said Karen Voci, president of the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation.

The Rhode Island Foundation is the largest and most comprehensive funder of nonprofit organizations in Rhode Island. Working with generous and visionary donors, the Foundation raised $38 million and awarded $43 million in grants to organizations addressing the state’s most pressing issues and needs of diverse communities in 2017. Through leadership, fundraising and grantmaking activities, often in partnership with individuals and organizations, the Foundation is helping Rhode Island reach its true potential.
