Thinking strategically about website design and content

“How could the Foundation website encourage others – donors, both current and future; nonprofit organizations; and community leaders – to partner with us to make Rhode Island a better place to live and work?”

This was the question we asked ourselves throughout our nine-month project to create an informative, easy to use, and engaging website. The Foundation is a complex organization with many audiences, so this is more challenging than it might seem. In the spirit of transparency, we thought we’d share with you some of the thinking behind our new site.

The all-new rifoundation.org is a completely re-designed and re-focused website that highlights Foundation initiatives, encourages site visitors to become involved, and is structured around three high-level focus areas:

Transforming Rhode Island highlights the Foundation’s leadership work – with our many partners – through initiatives as diverse as the Civic Leadership Fund that provides the opportunity to “be part of the solution now;” the Initiative for Nonprofit Excellence that works to help nonprofit organizations “better achieve their missions;”, and the Rhode Island Innovation Fellowships that are “designed to fuel solutions by Rhode Islanders to Rhode Island challenges.” Foundation impact, reflecting our commitment to ongoing learning, allows visitors to assess the Foundation’s work and learn about needs in the community.

Working Together has useful information and tools for many Foundation audiences. Donors – and individuals who wish to become donors – can learn how to work with the Foundation to address unmet needs in the community, to follow their passions, and to support causes they care about. Information on partnering with the Foundation, giving online, and (for donor advisors) managing their funds online all are possible through the website. Similarly, professional advisors will find philanthropic information beneficial to clients; nonprofits will learn about grant opportunities and starting an organizational endowment; and students can peruse the more than 150 scholarship funds established by generous Rhode Islanders.

Inside the Foundation introduces visitors to board and staff who lead the Foundation’s efforts to lead, transform, and inspire, as well as provides financial and investment information that conveys our stability and ability to be a force for change in the state.

An all-new feature, the Foundation blog, highlights Foundation happenings in a timely manner and shares learnings, reflections, and stories of impact and inspiration. It is a flexible platform that, we think, will complement our social media efforts. You will hear from many Foundation staffers in the months ahead.

In responding to advances in technology and with more of our website visitors coming to us on mobile devices and tablets, the new rifoundation.org is a completely responsive site, providing each user with optimal viewing including easy reading and navigation.

The website is one more tool through which the Foundation is conveying Rhode Island as a vibrant, successful community. We welcome your feedback and hope that you will continue to be a part of our work!
