Helping schools and students to succeed

Helping students and schools to succeed.  That’s the focus of City Year, the education-focused national service organization.  Founded in 1988, City Year partners with public schools in Providence and 26 other urban, high poverty communities across the US and internationally.

City Year provides valuable student, classroom, and school-wide support to help students stay in the classroom and on track to graduate from high school, ready for college and career success. And the model works: a recent third party study demonstrated that schools that partner with City Year were up to three times more likely to realize math and English gains than those without City Year partnerships.

Thanks to a leading role played by the Rhode Island Foundation, City Year has been active in Providence since 1993. In its more than 23 years of service, the Foundation has granted City Year Providence over $1 million which has helped deploy more than 1,000 AmeriCorps members, who have collectively dedicated more than 2.5 million hours of service to students in Providence public schools.

The Rhode Island Foundation is proud of its early support of City Year and we continue to salute the young people who serve Providence's schools as City Year Providence AmeriCorps members.
