Honoring 'the Jim Donaldson type of player'

“We wanted to do something to honor the Jim Donaldson type of player, someone who would put the team first,” Jim Donaldson, Jr. told us when he transferred a scholarship fund in his late father’s name to the Foundation in 2014. The James Donaldson Scholarship is awarded annually at Tolman High School, where the fund’s namesake coached from 1965 until his retirement 15 years later.

In 2015, the scholarship was presented to Leiandra Wilson, a four-year member of Tolman’s softball team. In an article in the Valley Breeze, when Leiandra was signing a National Letter of Intent to play softball at St. Anselm College (Manchester, NH), Assistant Softball Coach Jerry Sabatelli said, “She is one of the hardest working kids I’ve seen. She gets better every day. We have high expectations of her as she does, and I think she’ll do even better (at St. Anselm).”

Of his father, Jim says, “He loved coaching and the kids loved to play for him. He’d tell them, ‘I will help you be as good as you would like to try to be.'”
