Investing in promising medical research

Research into infectious diseases, cancer, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and more has been made possible by Rhode Islanders who established 19 funds at the Foundation to support medical research.

As with all of our more than 1,500 funds, each has a story behind it, often closely linking the donor with the purpose of the fund. For example, Anna Augusta Chapin established the Charles V. Chapin Fellowship Fund in 1968 to honor her late husband who was superintendent of health for the City of Providence for 48 years and was internationally known for his work in public health, most notably in the field of contagious diseases, which the fund is designated to support.

Barry Richmond created the Edythe K. and Jane E. Richmond Memorial Cancer Fund in 1998 to honor his mother and sister, both of whom died from cancer. The fund provides grants for cancer research.

Judith Clappin established the Gilbert J. Clappin, Jr. Memorial Fund in 2005 to honor her husband who had died earlier that year from a heart arrhythmia at age 49. This endowment is helping doctors learn more about arrhythmias and other heart conditions through its funding for cardiac research in Rhode Island.
