Investing in capacity in our nonprofit sector

The Rhode Island Foundation launched the Initiative for Nonprofit Excellence (INE) in 2008 to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations so they can better achieve their missions.

The Initiative supports nonprofits by sharing best practices, providing tools, doing good research, and encouraging leadership.

As Foundation Board member David M. Hirsch stepped into the Board Chair position in 2008, he committed $100,000 to create an endowment to support the work of INE.

Since that time, we have provided training, technical assistance, funding, and support to nearly 3,000 program participants representing more than 1,100 organizations.

Through our workshop series, we’ve offered tips on everything from how to schmooze to how to talk to your banker. We’ve convened 4 cohorts of 40 organizations focused on building internal capacity with the support of their peers.

We have provided leadership development for more than 1,000 board members, 160 Rhode Island Foundation Fellows, and 50 Emerging Leaders. And along with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island, the INE awards annual Best Practice Awards to spotlight organizations doing good work in areas like governance, communications, and advocacy.
