Pioneering innovation

A culinary incubator, mobile design studios, and digital textile printing are just some of the innovation underway thanks to our Rhode Island Innovation Fellowships.

Made possible through the generosity of philanthropists Letitia and John Carter, the program awards up to two entrepreneurs a year $300,000 to follow their dream. The Fellowships provide seed funding for big ideas that can generate big benefits. And there is no shortage of people who believe in themselves and our state. We launched the program in 2011 and Rhode Islanders have responded. They submitted more than 400 proposals that first year and hundreds of new ones every year afterwards.

The Fellowships focus on the greatest good for the greatest number of Rhode Islanders, a small idea that has big potential to be built to scale, or new approaches to longstanding, intractable challenges. Because we don’t expect every proposal will strike gold, we give weight to pioneering work, exceptional leadership, bold vision, and risk-taking.
