Teach For America

One in three children growing up in poverty won’t graduate from high school. Of those who do graduate from high school, less than 20% will enter a four-year college or university. And of that population, less than 9% will earn their bachelors degree by the age of 25. These are the statistics that motivate Teach For America, a national service organization that recruits, trains, and places classroom teachers in schools in low-income communities throughout the United States.

In 2010, the Rhode Island Foundation played a lead role bringing Teach For America to Rhode Island. Partnering with philanthropic Rhode Islanders from across our state, we led a campaign that raised over $2.5 million to ensure that Teach For America – Rhode Island would have the resources necessary to grow and sustain its presence in our state over time.

Over the last six years, that is what the organization has done. Teach For America – Rhode Island has developed deep partnerships with many of Rhode Island’s urban school districts, our public charter schools, and other important partners like our state’s institutions of higher education. Teach For America – Rhode Island now recruits a diverse corps of approximately 30 new teachers to work in Rhode Island schools every year. The organization also boasts a local alumni base of nearly 150 former corps members who work as classroom teachers, school leaders, and in other important education related roles.

We are proud to have played a leading role bringing this important partner to our state and we salute Teach For America’s teachers for their service to Rhode Island’s young people.
