The 1916 Society

The 1916 Society of the Rhode Island Foundation was established in 1998 “to acknowledge the many Rhode Islanders who plan to contribute to the Foundation in the future, through bequests, deferred gifts, or by naming us as a beneficiary to insurance policies.”

Named to commemorate the year of the Foundation’s founding, the Society was formed shortly after we received a sizable bequest and realized we knew nothing about the donor. Now, we have the pleasure of getting to know these special partners in philanthropy and can recognize them on our "Legacy Wall," through invitations to special events, and by being a resource for charitable giving. More than 600 individuals have been members of the 1916 Society since it was established.

Members of the 1916 Society have ensured support for diverse and important causes like insuring a vibrant arts community, honoring a beloved parent’s passion for historic preservation, and continuing the fight against domestic violence. And yet these are just a few examples of the amazing things members of our 1916 Society accomplish through foresight and planning.
