The Fund for Healthy Rhode Island

The Fund for Healthy Rhode Island (FFHRI) was established as a $20 million endowment fund at the Rhode Island Foundation in 2008, as a result of a legal settlement. The vision for the Fund was to build and support a model primary care system for the state that would ensure the broadest possible access to coordinated, high-quality care for all Rhode Islanders.

In coordination with our grantmaking in the health sector, the FFHRI allows us the flexibility to offer larger-scale, multi-year support to projects that target systems-level change. Collaborations and partnerships that work toward data sharing, payment reform, and policy change can be tested and refined. By approaching health care through a systems lens, the FFHRI can catalyze efforts that integrate public health, social services, and behavioral health, and offer incentives to a wide range of agencies and organizations to coordinate information and services – all with the goal of providing the best possible care to the residents of our state.

Since 2009, the FFHRI has provided more than $7 million in grants for Rhode Island’s primary care system. From increasing access to more affordable medications to loan repayment programs for primary care professionals, the FFHRI has identified the systemic barriers to affordable, accessible primary care, and invested in efforts to address them.

Working closely with state and national leaders in healthcare, with hospital systems, insurance providers, and community health systems, the FFHRI enhances our efforts to address critical gaps in care delivery. Testing innovations like shared medical appointments and integrated data management systems takes time and the commitment of many partners. The FFHRI allows us to invest in these long-term, large-scale changes that we believe will improve the health and well-being of Rhode Islanders for generations to come.
