Transforming waste to energy

The East Providence Solar Power Facility may look like a typical solar farm, but it is has a unique background. The largest solar facility in Rhode Island, it sits on twenty-two acres of what was once a landfill for the City of East Providence.

Working collaboratively with many state and local partners, the City of East Providence capped the landfill and repurposed it into a solar electric field, the first of its kind in the state. Recognizing the potential benefits of this innovative and adaptive reuse of space, the Foundation granted $40,000 in 2010 for a feasibility study for the project. The facility now includes 12,848 solar panels and generates 3.7 megawatts of electricity.

That’s enough to power nearly 500 Rhode Island homes at one time!
