The Initiative for Nonprofit Excellence (INE) provides opportunities for nonprofits to strengthen organizational capacity through topic-focused workshops.

INE workshops enable staff, board members, and volunteers representing Rhode Island nonprofit organizations to learn skills and techniques that will enable them to better achieve their mission.

Board chair peer learning meetings

We will convene board chairs (grouped by organization budget size) to share best practices and learning around key issues. All meetings are held from 9-10:30 a.m. over breakfast.

Target audience: Board chairs from organizations with budgets less than $500k
February 23: succession planning
April 27: board recruitment/orientation
June 22: board engagement
August 24: board chair/ED relationship
October 26: running your board meeting
December 14: board role in strategic planning

Board chair and executive director coaching program

This is a cohort learning program designed to clarify and deepen the partnership of new executive directors and board chairs. With a focus on board performance, the program provides a board assessment through BoardSource, peer learning, individual and group coaching, and a small grant of up to $2,500 in support of strong board performance. 

This program is geared toward an organizational team of an executive director with one to three years of experience in their current position, and a board chair with at least two years remaining in their current role. Acceptance into the program requires that executive directors and board chairs of selected organizations participate in all six group coaching sessions held from 9-11 a.m. on the following dates:

  • September 25
  • October 25
  • November 20
  • December 17
  • January 15
  • February 14 

This program is open to all nonprofit organizations with a preference given to those organizations with a pre-existing relationship with the Rhode Island Foundation. Interested organizations should submit an application no later than Tuesday, August 14, 2018.

Introduction to grant writing

Date and time: Wednesday, September 12, 2018, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Target audience: Open to all nonprofit board members and staff
Presenter: Jill Pfitzenmayer

This workshop will walk participants through the typical components in most grant requests, including the Rhode Island Foundation grant application, and includes tips for how to write a competitive grant proposal.

Introduction to fund development

Date and time: Wednesday, September 26, 2018, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Target audience: Open to all nonprofit board members and staff
Presenter: Keith Tavares

This workshop will help participants create and implement a successful fund development plan, including strategies for engaging, cultivating, and soliciting funding sources. Participants will have the opportunity to practice their fundraising skills in a supportive environment.

Getting your board from good to great

Date and time: Tuesday, November 6, 2018, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Target audience: All current nonprofit board members
Presenter: Jill Pfitzenmayer

What does it take to get your board of directors from “level good” to “level great?” This workshop will provide insight and guidance around those best practices that make all the difference toward the goal of becoming a great nonprofit board.

How to be a successful board fundraiser for your organization

Date and time: Thursday, November 8, 2018, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Target audience: All current nonprofit board members
Presenter: Keith Tavares

This workshop is aimed specifically at board members with passion for mission and limited experience around fund development. This program will provide concrete steps to make every board member a fundraiser.
