Community organizations answer the call

Every day, too many Rhode Islanders struggle to put food on the table, pay a utility bill, or make the rent payment. Volunteers and community-based organizations across the state are helping people in crisis with food, shelter, and energy assistance.

While much of the Foundation’s investments are directed at long-term, systemic change, our Basic Human Needs (BHN) program provides grants of up to $5,000 for help organizations that offer direct assistance to Rhode Islanders most in need. Needs met through the BHN program include food, clothing, childcare for homeless families, toiletries, and assistance with housing/rent, prescriptions, utilities, and transportation.

In the past decade, we have provided more than $4 million in grants to more than 200 organizations. BHN grants help thousands of people of all ages across every region of Rhode Island. We’ve helped provide heating assistance, filled weekend backpacks for the youth, and funded daily meals delivered to homebound elderly.
